New clothes, new attitude, new music, and a whole new Mumford & Sons. The English folk band has surprised a lot of people on their new album Wilder Mind by creating a new sound for the band. “Little Bits” – Nadine Carina

Nadine Carina did some great vocalist work with Cloud Seeding, who we featured a little while back. Her own EP, Little Bits, is far more eclectic. The looping of sounds give it an ethereal quality that borders on dream pop. With her cat meowing in the background. Her Swiss accent comes through in a delightful way. The EP is free and it is highly recommended. Find it on Bandcamp. This is on her Bandcamp page: “Little Bits” is a bit different from my previous stuff. Including a collaboration with producer Gated (aka Mathieu Bedwani), all of these songs are a … Continue reading “Little Bits” – Nadine Carina

Must Listen: The Last Bison

How can a song sound so familiar and yet you know that you haven’t heard it before? The Last Bison’s “Switzerland” is one of those songs, off their debut album Quill. Yes, it’s a seven piece band and yes, they are in the same vicinity that Mumford and Sons, Fleet Foxes, Trails and Ways, and Arcade Fire hang out in, with maybe a bit more banjo. Friday Night Sounds: Porch Listening

When I was first discovering my taste in music, I quickly avoided anything that remotely sounded like modern country. As a child, I remember driving down the road with my mom’s slightly off-tune alto belting out songs with such a forced twang that it was all I could do not to stick my fingers in my ears. But after driving on my own, and having the ability to turn off the innumerable country radio stations in the Baltimore metro area, I began to acknowledge that all elements of country weren’t terrible. Particularly its roots, roughly folk and bluegrass.  Once I … Continue reading Friday Night Sounds: Porch Listening

Afternoon tunes: The Oh Hello’s – “Lay Me Down”

The Oh Hello’s will instantly remind you of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, Of Monsters and Men, and Mumford and Sons. That’s not a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination…they are folk-y and great. They’re from Texas and I love their name. fire and brimstone fell upon my ears as their throats of open graves recited fear like the bullets of a gun they drove my tears and my feet to run the hell out of here – “Lay Me Down” by The Oh Hello’s Buy their album. From their site: Their influences range from Mumford & Sons and … Continue reading Afternoon tunes: The Oh Hello’s – “Lay Me Down”
