Electra Heart– Marina and the Diamonds

Rhyme et Reason favorite Marina Diamandis and the Diamonds‘ sophomore album Electra Heart is available in the States after what seemed like forever. I might be exaggerating slightly, but for god’s sake, it was released in the UK in MARCH! And that’s ages in an online era. (Record labels really must stop being surprised with illegal downloading/piracy when they do stupid shit like that.) I am happy to report that Electra Heart was worth the wait. Although, you shouldn’t expect a departure from the sound Diamandis carefully cultivated on her debut, The Family Jewels. That is not to say Marina hasn’t matured. Quite the … Continue reading Electra Heart– Marina and the Diamonds

Must See: “Primadonna”- Marina and the Diamonds

This is too good to be true. Marina and the Diamonds’ “Primadonna” simultaneously celebrates and slams celebrity, self-obsession, and materialism in 3 mins and 58 seconds. And it’s set to the prettiest beat. You heard it here: beats can be pretty. Marina’s “Primadonna Girl” is the long overdue (dare I say: feminist) response to Madonna’s “Material Girl.” No less dancy. A lot more self-reflective. Don’t believe me? Electra Heart is quickly shaping up to be my favorite record of 2012–with the exception of “Fear and Loathing,” of course.  Thankfully Marina hasn’t lost her edge. No sophomore slump, for sure. Also, … Continue reading Must See: “Primadonna”- Marina and the Diamonds

“radioactive”- marina and the diamonds

last week we featured part 1 of marina and the diamonds’ “electra’s heart” project–the wildly underwhelming “fear and loathing."  (to recap: it should have never been recorded, mastered or put to film.)  suffice it to say, thank god for part 2.  now "radioactive” is not a real departure from the sound that made marina the girl we know and love.  the lyrics are pretty damn clever, it is vaguely operatic and heavily influenced by the 1990s–dancy in the style of alizée’s “moi…lolita” (a song she’s admitted to being influenced).  but it does reflect a more mature sound.  at the very … Continue reading “radioactive”- marina and the diamonds
