I know, I know. So much praise and criticism from entertainment and feminist bloggers has dominated the pop culture discussion of the new HBO series Girls since the pilot aired on April 15, that we get it. She’s a voice of a generation! No! She doesn’t speak for me! So what else is there to say? Plenty. Driving back from D.C. yesterday, I was excited to catch Fresh Air’s interview with Lena Dunham, the creater, producer and star of Girls. It was the first time I heard her address the serious criticism toward the show that it doesn’t include any people of color as characters: I wrote the first … Continue reading In Defense of Girls and Lena Dunham
Because there are two days left in the weekend, I’m splitting this playlist into two – 2 general music genres, 2 songs from each artist. (I’m liking the number 2 today, and I am a Gemini, so bear with me.) … Continue reading Friday Night Sounds: A Playlist for the Weekend
Already heralded as a band to watch in 2012, Alabama Shakes – a bluesy, soulful rock quartet – will officially release it’s debut, Boys And Girls, tomorrow in stores, but why wait until then? The entire album has been available for a week now for free, thanks to the good folks at NPR. And I’ve been loving what I hear. Ugh. It’s mid-winter and I’m feeling it. Nevermind that we haven’t had an inch of snow! Cold nights, eight hours of sunlight and bare landscapes have put me in an introspective and contemplative mood, which seems fitting for this weekend’s bleak forecast of snow, sleet and rain. Tonight’s playlist reflects my mood with introspective and dreamy lyrics, simple arrangements (Eddie Vedder’s “Longing to Belong”) and pared down sounds for a quieter time of year that draws me inward. Click here to open in Spotify! Curl up in a warm place away from the cold and listen to: Woodkid Asa Regina … Continue reading Friday Night Sounds: a playlist for the weekend
