Rhyme et Reason Recommends: Exh-august-ion Playlist

If you’re on the east coast of the U.S. you’re probably pretty hot. It’s been sweltering for weeks. And now that it’s August (which is generally the hottest summer month anyway) you can expect to be a great deal hotter, which blows. Oh and if you’re in Maryland don’t forget about the humidity. Ugh. I’m exh-august-ed, already. So here’s some good music to get you (read: me) through. I recommend that you listen in order. Scattered? Sure! It’ll heat you up like that walk between your car and your office and then cool you down like the air conditioning that’s … Continue reading Rhyme et Reason Recommends: Exh-august-ion Playlist

Rhyme et Reason Recommends: Punk Covers en español

“Punk is dead” is just noise where it thrives in Latin America, Germany, Russia and many other places and cultures. Open the Spotify playlist to listen to some Spanish and Spanglish covers of well-known punk songs in English. First up is a cover of Police Truck by The Broken Toys, a punk band from Argentina. I think this version is even better than the original by the Dead Kennedys. (DK isn’t exactly known for traditional music excellence, but that’s part of the reason why we love ’em.) It’s sung in English, and there is only a slightly detectable accent. Next, 2 … Continue reading Rhyme et Reason Recommends: Punk Covers en español

RER Recommends: Some Rap/Hip Hop Songs That Aren’t So Bad

Rap (and most of hip hop) has never struck me as an art but rather as an irritatingly fast jumble of words uttered by people who normally don’t strike me as wordsmiths. Sure, you could say that Jay-Z (or Jays as the white hairs … Continue reading RER Recommends: Some Rap/Hip Hop Songs That Aren’t So Bad

RER Recommends: Cloud Surfing

These are songs to listen to when you’re lying on a blanket on a grassy knoll (not the kind you sit on and wait to kill someone) and stare at the clouds pass by. Not that the weather is especially conducive to this at the moment but, hey, I can dream about autumn approaching, can’t I?     Andrew Bird’s “Imitosis” is pleasant to lounge around and listen to and makes you feel smarter while doing it. The guy has a vocabulary, there is no doubt about that. This video is also pretty cool.       Rodrigo y Gabriela … Continue reading RER Recommends: Cloud Surfing
