Favorite Shows of 2016

Watching television was rewarding this year.

In no particular order, because how can you really rate things like television shows, I give you my list of shows that I really, really enjoyed.

  • Transparent (Amazon)
    • This show breaks down boundaries and challenges feminist concepts so well. It’s a must-see.
  • Fleabag (Amazon)
    • Short, funny, and sad AF. The best combination.
  • Insecure (HBO)
    • This show keeps things interesting and fresh.
  • Westworld (HBO)
    • The theories that this show produced online kept it interesting, while some of the performances were robotic (!).
  • Stranger Things (Netflix)
    • Captivating and comforting.
  • Rectify (Netflix)
    • A meditation on life. It’s beautiful and heartbreaking.
  • Happy Valley and Broad Church (tie) – (Netflix)
    • These detective shows keep you on your toes.
  • Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (on Hulu/CW app)
    • Excellent, if slightly off-kilter at times, show about how crazy life can get. The songs are great.
  • Stella (UK show on Hulu)
    • Small town show featuring Ruth Jones that makes me long for a different life. In Wales.
  • Bojack Horseman (Netflix)
    • The cartoon show that has nuance, ennui, and puns galore.

  • The Good Wife (Hulu, Prime)
    • The last season. It was so, so sad to watch it end. And also, kind of crazy.
  • The Crown (Netflix)
    • Fun to watch but very drawn out
  • Catastrophe (Amazon)
    • Season 1 was better
  • Lady Dynamite (Netflix)
    • All over the place, funny at times
  • The People vs. O.J (FX)
    • Marcia, Marcia, Marcia! Such a satisfying show.
  • Casual (Amazon)
    • Searing show about a family that can’t get their shit together
  • Broad City (on Hulu)
    • Hilarious, as always
  • High Maintenance (HBO)
    • Great but with some ups and downs
  • O.J.: Made in America (on Hulu)
    • Documentary that gives some great insight

Shows that I loved that I watched in 2016 that were from 2015 and before:

  • Scott and Bailey (Hulu)
    • Detective series with two women, shows the trials and tribulations they go through
  • The Americans (Amazon)
    • It just gets harder and harder out there for some Russian spies
  • Halt and Catch Fire (Netflix)
    • Season two was better than one and all I can say is that the male characters are the worst.
  • You’re the Worst  (Hulu)
    • Hilarious, mean, and touching at times. But mostly hilarious.
  • Mr Robot (Amazon)
    • Season one was thrilling
  • Please Like Me  (Hulu)
    • Australian show, gay characters, like watching Girls with a plot
  • Diary of a  Mad, Fat Teenager  (Hulu)
    • Endearing and real.
  • Being Erica  (Hulu)
    • Recommendation from June Thomas (of Slate). Time travel and a real look at your choices and how they effect you
  • Crashing (Netflix)
    • Fun show, short. Fun.
  • UnReal (Hulu)
    • Such an interesting idea come to life
  • Moone Boy (Hulu)
    • Imaginary friends can get you into trouble.
