Toast appeared in my Netflix Instant queue like a butterfly does on a butterfly bush. It was meant to be there. The movie is a delightful and somewhat dismal coming of age story about a boy’s family life and his urge to cook, since his childhood meals consist of his mother’s specialty: toast.
The movie has that cute kid actor who turned into an unrecognizable, yet still very talented, twenty year old Freddie Highmore, who plays Nigel Slater. The story is first set in Wolverhampton, where Caitlin Moran grew up, in the 1960s and then moves to the countryside where Nigel (Highmore) has to deal with his father’s new companion Mrs. Potter (Helena Bonham-Carter). Their food fights are fun for the fact that they’re inventive as well as competitive.
Watch it for the British humor, food, and happy ending.
