RER Recommends: Summer of Love

During our last heat wave a few weeks ago, ReR Editor-at-Large (Jeffrey Craig) and I were remembering how great Alicia Keys’ early music was when she first arrived on the scene a decade ago with a fresh soulful, R&B sound. Flash forward to today, with the release in stores of Frank Ocean’s understated and brilliant album, Channel Orange, and it’s got me thumbing through my iPod to hear R&B songs from the past decade about love – from the unrequited, rock-solid or vengeful kind to first love. (No cheesy, sappy love songs here.) There’s not many genres of popular music that can match the emotion of a good R&B/soul love song. Here’s a sampling of what I’m listening to:

Alicia Keys, “If I Ain’t Got You”

John Legend, “Save Room”

Frank Ocean, “Thinkin Bout You”

Estelle, “No Substitute Love”
